Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today (Nov 19) told MPs that he has informed the relevant stakeholders to carry out investigations into the unruly scenes that were witnessed in Parliament.
The Speaker was referring to the instances during which parliamentarians had misused the Speaker's chair while also bringing in foreign objects such as chillie powder and engaging in fistcuffs within the chamber. He had also condemned the attempt by MPs to vandalise the parliament's property by calling it an "illegal act"
Issuing a press release, the Speaker's Office stated that Speaker Jaysuriya had told MPs that he had strengthened the sceurity in Parliament as he was informed of a move to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
Addressing today's party leaders meeting, the Speaker had also refuted allgations of a planned attempt to bring in more people to observe parliamentary proceedings from the gallery.
He also noted that each MP was given a pass entitling 3-5 supporters to witness parliamentary sessions from the gallery.
