Speaker Karu Jayasuriya's office has confirmed that a no-confidence motion against Mahinda Rajapaksa was passed in Parliament today (Nov 16) and measures have been taken to officially notify President Sirisena.
The Speakers Office issuing a release said that 122 MPs had voted for the no-confidence motion when Parliament was convened today.
The release noted that Clause two of the motion was passed, while also stating that the cabinet was dissolved as per Article 48 (2) of the constitution.
The second no-confidence motion presented today did not include the first clause that was included in the initial no-confidence motion presented against MR and his government. It was removed as a request made by President Sirisena at the Party leaders meeting yesterday (Nov 15).
