Speaker Karu Jayasuriya in a letter to President Sirisena has requested that the latter protect the privileges of Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe until the person with the confidence of a majority in Parliament is established as Prime Minister.
The Speaker's letter comes in response to a request made by the UNP for the same (see attached document). Further, the Speaker has suggested that in light of the current political situation with its ensuing hostilities at state media institutions and with several countries updating travel advisories to reconsider the continuing of the prorogation of Parliament till November 16.
Speaker Jayasuriya also pointed out that a " prorogation should be done in consultation with the Speaker."
