A special traffic-light colour code system is to be implemented to measure sugar, salt and fat levels of food items from April 02, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.
This move has been initiated by the Health Ministry owing to the rising number of health issues owing to excessive consumption of processed food items.
Accordingly, all food items will bear three colour code symbols depicting the sugar. salt, and fat levels respectively.
Minister Senaratne said that this move would initially be implemented across all supermarkets following which it would be extended into the interior parts of the country.
Packaged food items being exported will also carry the colour code.
A special media conference would be convened tomorrow by officials of the Health Ministry and the representatives of food production companies.
