The Police has set-up a Special Operations Unit to curb activities of organised criminal groups along the Kelani river belt from Avissawella to Wellampitiya.
The unit will be tasked with containing unlawful activities such as threatening people to sell their lands at low rates, filling lands illegally, and taking ransoms in these areas.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-in-charge of the Northern Division in the Western Province Waruna Jayasundara will head the special body, the Defence Ministry said.
Accordingly, the general public will be able to anonymously file complaints regarding these incidents on 071 368 0001 (DIG’s Office in Peliyagoda).
