Sri Lanka today (Sept 20) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Maldives to relax legal consequences faced by fishermen if apprehended poaching in each other's maritime boundaries.
Fisheries State Minister Dileep Wedaarachchi signed the agreement with Maldives Ambassador to Sri Lanka Omar Abdul Razzak.
Accordingly, it had been agreed that fishermen of both countries would not be arrested, but instead warned and returned along with their boat to their respective country.
However, the items in the boat would be confiscated by the authorities, the agreement said.
Meanwhile, the MoU also stated that fishermen could enter each other's seas and travel towards their harbours in case of any weather-related emergency.
