A global anti-corruption body has urged Sri Lanka to uplift its commitment towards ensuring the Right to Information (RTI), after its recent assessment showed that the country “needs some improvement”.
Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) said that the assessment had been conducted using the approach of ‘Freedom of Information Advocates Network’ (FOIAnet), which works towards promoting RTI.
Sri Lanka had scored red for proactive disclosure, yellow each for institutional measures and the processing of requests.
The colour scoring ranges from Red (needs significant improvement), Yellow (needs some improvement), and Green (needs little improvement).
Speaking on the findings of the assessment, TISL Executive Director Asoka Obeyesekere said that issues such as the failure to proactively disclose information "require the urgent attention of the state, as it holds the key to tackling corruption".
