The IT Society in Sri Lanka has urged stricter attention to be paid towards all government websites in the wake of today's technical failure which took place at the Department of Registration of Persons.
Issuing a press release, the IT Society viewed today's incident as an issue which could cause immense problems since the one-day service for obtaining National Identity Card (NIC)'s remained defunct today.
"...all state websites must have a backup system in order to provide an uninterrupted service to the public," R.Y. Kuruvitage Mathew, Society Chairman said in the press release.
While pointing out that the Department of Registration of Persons website was an outdated one, Mr. Mathew warned that the site could be easily hacked since it had not been secured using a special encryption.
He also noted that the creator of the website could be charged for misusing state property since he had included the link to his personal Facebook account at the bottom of an official government website.
Accordingly, he called on the Department to conduct an investigation into this matter and restore its computer systems to normalcy.
