Sri Lankans spend around Rs 970 million on the purchase of alcohol and drugs, the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) revealed in a report.
The Resource Centre, promoting drug demand reduction, claimed in a report that Rs 500 million is spent on Arrack while Rs 90 million is spent on beer and Rs 380 million is spent to purchase cigarettes, the report noted.
The ADIC report has been compiled by obtaining the statistics of the Excise Department and the Ceylon Tobacco Company.
Further, it has been revealed that less than 0.1 percent of women consume cigarettes while the rate of liquor consumption by women stands at less than 0.5 percent.
The report also goes on to state that 34.8 percent of men consume liquor while 29.4 percent consume cigarettes.
