SriLankan Airlines - Sri Lanka's national air carrier has been suffering from losses worth millions due to overstaffing, State Transport Minister Ashok Abeysinghe said.
The number of staffers for each flight stands at 333, Mr. Abeysinghe was quoted saying in local media. "Generally each flight is expected to have only between 110 - 120 staffers."
The state transport minister added that there are 21 leased flights which are currently in operation. "There are more than 8000 employees in all these flights. Due to this reason, SriLankan suffers more than Rs 10 million in losses," he observed.
Mr. Abeysinghe further said that talks are underway with certain parties in order to handover the operations of the national air carrier in a bid to transform it into a profit making venture.
