The Supreme Court has determined that the Foreign Exchange Bill that seeks to liberalise exchange laws in the country is not inconsistent with the Constitution, Parliament was told today.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced that the SC had informed him that the Bill can be presented to Parliament after a few minor errors contained in it are rectified.
A petition challenging the bill titled “Foreign Exchange, 2017" was filed in the Supreme Court by UPFA MP Bandula Gunawardena.
The petitioner sought the Court determination that the Bill only becomes law only through a two-third majority in Parliament and the approval of the people at a referendum. The Bill was presented to the Parliament and placed on Order Paper of the Parliament on April 7.
