One suspect has been arrested in connection with an incident on Monday (6) night where police in Rajanganaya opened fire on a three-wheeler whose occupants failed to stop.
The initial incident had occurred at about 7.30pm on Monday when two officers from the motorbike unit of the Rajanganaya Police who were on duty near 27 Junction on the Anuradhapura-Puttalam Road signalled for a three-wheeler headed from Nochchiyagama to Rajanganaya to stop.
The three-wheeler however, had continued without stopping, resulting in one of the officers firing shots at the rear wheels of the three-wheeler using his pistol in an attempt to force the vehicle to stop.
Police later found the three-wheeler abandoned on a byroad with its occupants missing. Rajanganaya police launched an investigation to trace them and uncovered that four suspects were in it at the time of the incident. One of those suspects was arrested yesterday at Thammennawa.
The suspect was identified as a 29-year-old resident of Thammennawa. He is due to be produced before the Thambuththegama Magistrate today (9). Rajanganaya police are conducting an investigation to arrest the other suspects who were in the three-wheeler and to uncover if they were fleeing the scene after committing any crime.
