A suspect who attempted to flee police custody after being arrested over a narcotic offence has died after police opened fire at him in Karapitiya today (Nov 12).
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the suspect had been nabbed with 33.6 grams of heroin opposite the Galle Municipal Council yesterday by the Police Narcotics Bureau.
Dinesh Chaminda, 34, a resident of Poddala, had attempted to flee custody while being produced before the Judicial Medical Officer at the Karapitiya Hospital for a medical test.
He had died while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya hospital.
SSP Gunasekara said that the deceased had four narcotic-related cases against him.
