A suspect who was involved in the theft of Rs 1.4 million from three individuals, who had arrived to purchase a gem, has been arrested yesterday (Oct 28).
Police said that an individual believed to be a gem trader had brought three customers to a residence in Kandana, through a broker, to purchase a gem, on November 5.
However, the alleged trader had stolen the cash from the customers and fled the area in a jeep.
The Peliyagoda Crimes Division, which commenced a probe into the incident, had apprehended six suspects afterward.
The driver of the jeep had been arrested with his vehicle in the Dodanduwa area last morning, over charges of abetting the theft. He has been identified as a 41-year old resident of Bemmulla, and is due to be produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court today.
