Teachers and Principals have suspended their strike scheduled from October 7 to 11, after the cabinet had agreed to resolve their salary issues.
"The cabinet has agreed to increase the salaries of principals and introduce a new salary structure for teachers," Mahinda Jayasinghe, Secretary to the Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) said.
Unions comprising teachers and principals had taken part in trade union action on multiple occasions citing salary anomalies, excessive workload, and demanding to allocate six percent of the country's Gross Domestic Production (GDP) for education.
Mr. Jayasinghe, said that the issue of excessive workload, and the budgetary allocation towards education are being discussed with the Education Ministry at present.
"We will decide on our future action after observing the government's progress towards our demands for two weeks," the CTSU General Secretary told Times Online.
