Seven suspects, including a teenager, have been arrested by police over a spate of robberies that took place in the Ambalantota and Hambantota police divisions.
At about 1.10pm yesterday (1), a group led by the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Tangalle Crime Investigation Division arrested a 17-year-old suspect from Beragama in connection with the theft of two gold chains in the area.
Six other suspects were subsequently arrested from the same area in connection with breaking into an ironworks in Beragama. Ambalantota and stealing property worth Rs.37, 500 and also for another robbery at a construction site of the Southern Expressway where property amounting to over Rs.150. 000 were stolen.
The suspects are between the ages 22 and 44 years. They are residents of Koggalla and Beragama. Police also recovered 800 litres of diesel, an earth surfacing machine, a grease machine, 10 iron tubes measuring 18 feet which were allegedly stolen by the suspects. A double cab and a lorry used to transport the stolen property were also recovered.
The suspects were due to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate's Court today.
