At least ten suspects were taken into custody for possession of narcotics including heroin, Kerala cannabis and controlled drugs in separate operations conducted by the Navy and Police during the week, Navy said.
The Eastern Naval Command in coordination with the Kuchchaveli Police nabbed a suspect with 02g and 100mg of heroin, during a search in the Kuchchaveli area. Similarly, the Northwestern Naval Command together with the Division Vice Branch of Puttalam collared 05 suspects, after searching a suspicious three-wheeler on the Mannar Road, Puttalam, for possession of 01g and 500mg of heroin.
In another combined operation conducted in Nagawilluwa general area, the Northwestern Naval Command and Puttalam Police held 02 suspects in possession of 45g of Kerala cannabis.
Meanwhile, the Western Naval Command with the assistance of the office of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Negombo apprehended another suspect with 02g of Kerala cannabis and about 1000 tablets of controlled drug ‘Pregabalin’ (75mg) while he was transferring those substances by a motorbike in Kochchikade area. The motorbike used to transport the illegal drugs was also seized during the arrest.
Meanwhile, another person with 12kg of ‘Mawa’ had been apprehended in a search carried out by the Northwestern Naval Command in Paniadiya, Norochcholai. The accused held in these separate operations were identified as persons from Poduwakattu, Puttalam, Dankotuwa and Norochcholai areas and ranged from 21 to 41 years of age.
