About 25 persons sustained injuries after a private bus struck a tree at Yayawatta in Tangalle early this morning (28).
The bus had been on its way from Kataragama to Colombo when the accident occurred along the Tissa-Matara Main Road at about 4.00am.
Twelve men and one woman were injured in the incident. Police said one of the injured males is a foreign national.
The injured were admitted to the Tangalle Hospital and four of them have already been discharged. Hospital authorities stated none of the injured are in a serious condition.
Police believe the accident occurred due to slippery road conditions caused by heavy rain as well as the driver being unable to control his vehicle due to excessive speed.
The driver and conductor of the bus had fled the scene after the accident and Tangalle Police have launched an investigation to arrest them.
