Three persons have been killed while five were left injured in a collision involving a lorry and a luxury bus along the Medawachchiya - Anuradhapura road last night.
According to the police, the accident had occured at around 11:50 pm when the bus which had been travelling towards Jaffna had collided with the lorry which had been heading towards Dambulla.
Eight persons who had sustained injuries in the mishap had been admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital following which three had succumbed to death.
The deceased have been identified as residents of Jaffna aged 53, 30, and 12. The injured victims which include three children continue to receive treatment at the Anuradhapura hospital.
Meanwhile, the bus driver involved in the accident has been taken into custody while the lorry driver is believed to have fled the area. Further investigations continue.
