Former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has said he would support UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa who is tipped to be a Presidential candidate.
Mr. Attanayake who had distanced himself from the UNP since it assumed power in 2015, made this remark in response to an invitation extended by Minister Premadasa yesterday (Sept 24).
In his response letter, Mr. Attanayake explained that he had distanced himself since the party had ignored his repeated calls to nominate a UNP presidential candidate in 2015.
"...I sidelined myself since I foresaw the unfortunate circumstances which we are facing at present (as a result of the UNP's decision)," he said in his letter.
He remarked that he would ellaborate on the circumstances which forced him to isolate himself, in his upcoming book titled 'Nokiyuu Kathaa' (Untold Stories).
"It is my duty to forget the bitter past and unite with you to fulfill the aspirations of the party supporters by sacrificing my life for the party," Mr. Attanayake emphasized.
He also called on other individuals who had dissociated with the party to join hands with Minister Premadasa to establish a stable future for the country under his leadership.
