A police officer giving chase to a vehicle reportedly illegally transporting cattle was killed when his car crashed into the clock tower in Anamaduwa today (5) morning, police said.
Sub Inspector Ajith Kumara (38), killed in the accident was the OIC of the traffic division of the Anamaduwa Police.
He was accompanied by the OIC of the anti-vice division of the station who has been injured in the incident.
The Traffic OIC's wife also is attached to the police and serves in the Polgahawela Police station.
According to initial investigations, the officer had lost control of the vehicle while giving chase to the lorry.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
The deadline for online applications to the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has been extended until July 12, the Department of Examinations said.
