The Ministry of Transport has issued a gazette notificiation stating that the minimum fine imposed on seven motor traffic offences will be increased upto Rs 25,000.
This was after President Maithripala Sirisena had appointed a five-member committee to provide recommendations related to fines imposed on motor traffic regulatory violations.
Secretaries of the Finance, Civil Aviation and Transport ministries along with the Deputy Solicitor General, Motor Traffic Commissioner General and the Senior DIGs of Motor Traffic were among those in this committee.
This committee had recommended that fines be increased upto Rs 25,000, the Transport Ministry said in a statement.
Accordingly, the offences and the revised fines are as follows:
Driving without a license
Employing a driver without a licence
Driving under the influence of liquor / narcotics
Transporting passengers for hire while being under the influence of liquor
Causing injuries / death to a person while driving under the influence of liquor ;
In case of death;
In case of causing serious injuries to a person;
In case of causing minor injuries to a person;
Driving through railway crossings in a haphazard manner
Driving without a valid insurance cover
Speeding
Driving 20 percent more than the maximum speed limit
Driving between 20 percent to 30 percent more the maximum speed limit
Driving between 30 percent to 50 percent more the maximum speed limit
Driving more than 50 percent of the maximum speed limit
Overtaking from the left side / breaching road rules
