Transport sector strike causes commuter chaos

News

Commuters throughout the country faced severe difficulties this morning owing to the island-wide strike launched by transport sector unions from midnight yesterday.

Several private bus unions and three-wheeler driver unions went on strike demanding that the Government withdraw the proposed fine increase of Rs.25,000 for several offences.

However, the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) has announced that it is not taking part in the strike.

Despite this, private bus services have reportedly been hit hard throughout the country, with many commuters being forced to wait for several hours on the road waiting for buses. The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) is operating additional buses today in a bid to minimize inconveniences to the public.
