An eight-year old elephant was found dead near the Thanamalwila-Udawalawe road in the Udawalawe National park earlier today (Dec 01).
A post-mortem examination on the body was carried out today by Veterinarian Malaka Abeywardena.
It is reported that wildlife officials had engaged in an inspection tour around the park at 1:30 am and had discovered that the elephant was missing at that time.
Wildlife officials are conducting further investigations into the incident.
