A group of twenty persons who were engaging in illegal sand mining near sembalthetti area of Trinco were taken into custody yesterday, Navy said.
According to the Navy, since it regularly conducts operations to curb the illegal activities, a team of Naval personnel attached to Eastern Naval Command apprehend 20 persons who were loading sand without a permit at Sembalthetti area in Trincomalee. The suspects were identified as residents of Trincomalee and Kinniya areas aged 20 to 49.
Four (04) tractors with trailer, instruments used by them and about 03 cubes of sand were also taken into Naval custody. The suspects, tractors with trailer, instruments used for loading and sand were handed over to Kinniya Police for onward legal action.
