Two 15-year old students are reported to have drowned in the Iratta Periyakulam reservoir, Vavuniya at around 12:35 pm today (Jan 15).
Police said that six students including the victims were seated on the bund of the reservoir when one student had accidentally slipped into the water. In a bid to save the drowning child three other students had jumped into the water following which they too had begun drowning.
However, area residents managed to save two children while one succumbed to death.
The rescued students are currently receiving treatement at the Vavuniya hospital.
The remains of the victims lie at the Vavuniya hospital.
