An army captain and a lance corporal attached to the Weerawila army camp have been arrested for extorting a ransom of Rs 500,000 in an illegal sand mining operation.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspects had obtained the ransom by allegedly claiming that they were friends of STF Commandent DIG M.R. Latiff.
Police officials who had inspected the house of the lance corporal had discovered a stack of army uniforms, 48 rounds of ammunition used to fire T-56 guns, and a hand grenade.
The suspects have been handed over to the Kuda Oya police by the Special Task Force (STF) for further investigations.
The corporal and the Captain have been identified as residents of Thanamalwila and Sapugaskanda respectively.
