The Sri Lanka Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) today (Monday) permitted two local companies Holcim Lanka, now rebranded as INSEE Cement and Tokyo Cement to increase the price of a 50 KG by Rs. 30 with effect from last Wednesday.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce had given consent to these two companies to increase the cement price subject to the approval of the CAA as it is a price-controlled commodity.
The decision has been made after a request has been made by the two companies out of five cement firms to increase the price citing high cost for the importation of raw materials needed for the manufacture of cement locally, official sources said.
The other three cement companies have not made any request to the CAA to increase the price so far and the imported cement price has also not changed up to now, cement traders said.
However this sudden move of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has raised eyebrows of house builders, contractors and consumers as it has given permission only to two companies to increase the controlled price of cement. (Bandula)
