Two more Customs officials arrested over Rs.125M bribe

News

Two more Sri Lanka Customs officials have been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) in connection with soliciting a bribe of Rs.125 million.

The two suspects are said to be Customs Superintendents. Their arrests bring to five the number of Customs officials arrested as part of the investigations into the incident.

In October, last year, three Customs officials were taken into custody by officials from the Bribery Commission for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs.125 million from a businessman in order to release a consignment of spare parts imported to be used by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).

The three officials who were arrested on that occasion are a Customs Superintendent, a Deputy Customs Superitendent and an Assistant Customs Superintendent.

According to the Bribery Commission, this is the largest single bribe known to have been detected by authorities thus far.
