Two senior police officers attached to the Fort Police have been interdicted for issuing a letter containing false information regarding a possible attack in the future.
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said the police officers had been interdicted after an investigation carried out by the Special Investigation Unit of the Police Headquarters.
Among the suspended officers are a Chief Inspector serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Crimes Branch and an Inspector serving as the OIC of the Fort Administrative Unit at the Fort Police Station.
Images of the letter circulating on social media showed that the Fort Police OIC, in a letter dated October 2, had written to some leading hotels calling for a daily report of their check-in register.
The officer had said that intelligence officers have been informed of another terrorist attack similar to that on Easter Sunday, and that the Police were in possession of details of individuals plotting the attack.
However, the Police Headquarters in a statement said that the details mentioned in the letter had not been confirmed by intelligence units.
