Two suspects were arrested for transporting nearly two kilograms of heroin worth Rs 10.2 million in a luxury vehicle in Ambalangoda, Galle earlier today (Mar 10).
The arrest was carried out by officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau division of the Galle Police.
The suspects have been identified as 68-year old Mendis Gunasekara, a former Principal, and 43-year old businessman Raj Ranasinghe. They are residents of Rathgama and Uragasmanhandiya respectively.
Investigations have revealed that the fomer Principal's brother is currently serving an imprisonment sentence at the Kalutara prison over a drug related crime while the businessman is found to have been operating a vehicle rental service.
This is the largest narcotic seizure recorded in the Galle district during the recent past, police said.
The suspects will be produced before the Balapitiya courts today.
