UN calls on Lanka to pursue war crimes with credible process

News

The United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday called on Sri Lanka to establish a credible justice process, including foreign judges and prosecutors, to investigate alleged war crimes committed during the long conflict that ended in 2009. The 47 member state Geneva forum adopted a resolution, without a vote, that was led by the United States and Britain, and backed by Sri Lanka itself. Government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels "most likely" committed war crimes including mass killings of civilians during their 26-year war that should be prosecuted by a special court with international judges, the U.N. said in a landmark report issued last month that formed the basis of the resolution.
