A university student who was remanded for spreading a false rumour regarding a plane crash involving President Maithripala Sirisena on Facebook was released on bail today (May 24).
During today's hearing, Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne had released the suspect on a surety bail of Rs 100,000.
The undergraduate had published a Facebook post stating that the flight in which President Maithripala Sirisena was travelling to China had crashed mid-way though the journey.
Accordingly, the President's Media Division complained to the Criminal Investigations Department in this regard following which a case was filed before court.
Further hearing on the case will take place on June 27.
