United National Party (UNP) member of Parliament S.M.Marikkar today called the government to have a separate location for protests in Colombo in view of the inconvenience caused to the public by holding demonstrations in the city.
Mr Marikkar moving a adjournment motion told Parliament that in view of the demonstrations foreign investors as well as tourists were adversely affected.
He said that a separate location should be given for those who want to carryout demonstrations to ensure that the public were not affected by such protests.
During the past three months more than 60 demonstrations have been held in the Colombo city alone and most of them have been conducted for more than three hours eventually forcing the police to use tear gas to disperse them.
However JVP Parliamentarian Nalinda Jayatissa said this move is to curb the legitimate activities and demonstrations organized by the trade unions.
