The ruling United National Party (UNP)'s parliamentary group during its meeting today (Nov 18), has agreed on a proposal to dissolve Parliament, sources said.
Sources noted that UNP leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had obtained approval and would pass on the proposal to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Sri Lanka's constitution grants the Parliament a term of five years which will end in August 2020.
The President can dissolve the Parliament by four-and-a-half-years which would mean that the Parliament can continue to function until February 2020.
However, any attempt to dissolve Parliament before that date should be passed in Parliament with a two-thirds majority.
The constitution allows Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to stay in his position until the term of the Parliament ends, despite Mr Rajapaksa's election to office.
