The Mayor of Moratuwa along with some other councillors and carpenters have called off their hunger strike which was staged against the President's remarks on the carpentry trade.
The hunger strike had been called off after State Minister Eran Wickremaratne had handed over a letter pledging to fulfill the demands of the protestors and to also provide relief for them.
President Maithripala Sirisena had recently stated that he would issue a gazette to ban all 'mobile carpentry sheds' and stop issuing permits for carpentry sheds in future.
However, the protestors insisted that a clause must be included in this gazette to ensure that these regulations will not be implemented in the Moratuwa area.
