The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Atul Keshap yesterday called upon the Government of the Maldives to ensure that the Majlis (Maldivian Parliament) functions freely in accordance with Maldivian law and parliamentary procedure.
In a statement issued on the situation in the Maldives, Ambassador Keshap said that a free and fair parliament governed by impartial rules is essential to the proper functioning of any healthy democracy.
He said that the events taking place in the Majlis in the past few days are disturbing and unfortunate.
“The United States will continue to stand in solidarity with people of the Maldives,” he said
