US-China war & Russian sanctions oppose growth in global shipping industry; Sagala

Minister of Ports Shipping and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayaka said that global shipping sector is facing numerous challenges in current period where the growth of this industry has been limited relative to previous years due to US China trade war and Russian sanctions. 

"These are the dominant factors in the world’s stage which have been resulted to limitations of growth, in the global shipping sector.I hope this instability occurred in international politics will be turned stable in the future," he said. 

Minister Sagala Ratnayaka made these remarks while delivering the keynote speech at the first German Sri Lankan Logistics Conference held in the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo yesterday. German Vice-Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure Steffen Bilger, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Southern Development, Sri Lanka Admiral Sirimewan Ranasinghe, Sri Lankan ambassador to Germany Karunasena kodithuwakku, Chairman of SLPA Kavan Ratnayaka and a group of High profile officials of the shipping sector were attended to this occasion.

He further added that as the global shipping industry fails to continue its growth rate, Colombo Port should make strategies to ensure steady growth rate in the industry while taking timely decisions. Unfortunately Colombo port had been failed to take needed decisions at the right time, to get adapted to new trends in the industry and they were running out of time. 

"Subsequently following our appointment, we had been fast tracking the decision taking procedure of Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) and signed MOU with Japan and India on the Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) project which is timely need. Completion of ECT project will assure the SLPA’s ability to handle large ships, the new trend in the shipping industry. Furthermore, we have already initiated to establish Smart port technology at the Colombo port, to accomplish our major goal; most efficient and effective port in the region,"
