US embassy issues security alert; warns of terrorist groups plotting attacks

The US Embassy in Colombo yesterday issued a security alert through its website warning citizens in the country and those hoping to travel to the country that Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka.

The statement reads as follows:

Event:  Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Sri Lanka. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, hospitals, and other public areas.

Actions to Take:

• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
• Review your personal security plans.
• Notify friends and family of your safety.
• Follow the instructions of local authorities.
• Monitor local media for updates.
