The US Embassy has warned the public of a Diversity Visa (Green Card Lottery) scam through email.
"The scammers behind these fraudulent emails and letters are posing as the U.S. government in an attempt to extract payment from Diversity Visa (DV) applicants," the US Department of State said in a warning posted on its website.
Applicants can only find out if they were selected to continue with DV processing by checking their status online through the DV Entrant Status Check at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov, the statement read.
Fees for the DV application process should be paid to the US Embassy or consulate cashier, and not through cheques, money order, or wire transfers.
''We will never send you an email asking you to pay fees,'' the US Embassy in Colombo said on its Twitter handle.
Don't be fooled by #DVLottery scams!! WE WILL NEVER SEND YOU AN EMAIL ASKING YOU TO PAY FEES. Read more here: https://t.co/m91n7w4obF pic.twitter.com/dDpUQQW8XQ
