The US has said the appointment of Major General Shavendra Silva as Army Chief undermined Sri Lanka's international reputation and its commitments to promote justice and accountability.
Issuing a statement the US Embassy in Colombo said the "The allegations of gross human rights violations against him, documented by the United Nations and other organizations, are serious and credible."
The US expressed deep concern regarding the recent appointment added that Sri Lanka's reputation to promote justice was being undermined at a time when the need for reconciliation and social unity is paramount.
