Not only the towns and villages, but some of the wildlife refuges too are affected by floods. As the road network and many areas are flooded, the Wilpattu National Park has been closed, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said. The National Park is scheduled to reopen on 25th of May subject to the situation.
Though floods help to keep the balance of the ecosystem, extreme floods can trouble local wildlife specially the small, slow moving and animals that live in burrows. Many of the animals can swim atleast shorter distances – so they have the ability to move to higher grounds or take refuge in trees; but if caught in torrents, they too can get killed.
