Woman arrested as police bust social media scam

A 64-year-old woman who allegedly defrauded people through a scheme conducted over Facebook has been arrested. Police Media Unit stated that the woman was arrested based on a complaint made to the Weligama Police last evening (20).

Police said that the suspect would contact victims over Facebook claiming they had won gifts parcels from overseas and persuade them to deposit money in bank accounts belonging to her on the pretext of sending the gift parcels to the victims. 

The female suspect is a resident of Homagama. She is due to be produced before the Matara Magistrate's Court today. Weligama Police are investigating.  

Police have appealed to the public not to fall victim to such crimes carried out through the internet and social media.
