A Sri Lankan woman who tried to smuggle USD100, 000 (equivelnt to Rs 15, 500, 000) into the country was apprehended by Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning (13).
The 36-year-old suspect had arrived in the country from Chennai and was attempting to exit the airport using the Customs Green Channel when she was searched by Customs Narcotic Control staff at BIA. They had found the USD 100, 000 hidden in her handbag, Customs Spokesman Sunil Jayarathna stated.
The suspect, a resident of Colombo, was arrested over non declaration of the cash. Further investigations are ongoing.
