Thousands of residents in Polonnaruwa and Hingurakgoda were left without electricity for more than 12 hours after a youth climbed a tower supporting high a voltage powerline in protest over a broken love affair, Police said.
The 22 year old youth from Bandarawela had climbed the tower at a location known as Bubula in Polonnaruwa last evening forcing the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to cut off power supplies for the safety of the youth.
Police had sought the assistance of the Air Force, but in fear of that the youth could jump off the tower the local authorities were told to convince the youth to get off.
After about 12 hours the police convinced the youth to get off the tower today morning.
He claimed that he had got onto the tower in protest after his girlfriend had left him. (DW)
