The Department Of National Zoological Gardens has received cabinet approval to consult key state institutions to develop zoological parks under its purview.
The Wildlife Ministry, which oversees the Department, in a Cabinet paper, said that the development of these parks is to be completed by the end of 2022.
These development activities are being carried out upon advice obtained from the State Engineering Corporation, Construction Industry Development Authority, Buildings Department, Urban Development Authority, and the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau.
Accordingly, the Ministry had requested for cabinet approval, to further obtain advice from these state bodies, concerning ongoing development projects.
In the proposal, the ministry observed that these activities are being carried out at the Dehiwala Zoo, Pinnawala elephant orphanage, Pinnawala zoo, Ridiyagama safari park, and the Gonapola farm.
