Former Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias 'Pillayan' was transferred from the Batticaloa Prison to the Welikada Prison in Colombo this afternoon under heavy guard to attend tomorrow's inaugural session of the new Parliament.
Prison authorities stated that once at Welikada, he will be kept in separate confinement away from other prisoners.
Pillayan has spent over four and a half years in remand custody after being arrested in connection with the assasination of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham on Christmas Day, 2005.
The Batticaloa High Court yesterday allowed Pillayan to attend the inaugural session of the Ninth Parliament tomorrow (20).
He was elected to Parliament at the 2020 Parliamentary election from the Batticaloa district under the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), which he heads. (PCK)
