The Department of Prisons has relocated 121 female inmates at the Welikada Prison to the new prison complex at Angunukolapelessa.
A senior officer at the department said they will also be relocating another 400 inmates from Welikda to Angunukolapelessa in the coming days.
The Angunukolapelessa prison has the capacity to house 1500 inmates and about 700 prisoners are already housed there.
Built at a cost of Rs.4996 million, the prison was declared open on October 16, last year. Spread over 65 acres, the prison complex is built according to international standards and includes a restaurant, a canteen, guest rooms and lecture halls.
