Olympic silver medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe has been appointed as an advisor to the Ministry of Sports with immediate effect according to sources.
Jayasinghe, 45, who won the Women's 200m silver medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 has been appointed as a permanent employee of the Ministry of Sports, a position she will retain until she reaches 55.
The appointment, according to reliable sources, has been enacted with effect from August 2021.
Through Jayasinghe's appointment, the Ministry of Sports intends to draw more emphasis on track and field events, which has potential to win medals at international level.
Jayasinghe will be in-charge of scouting athletic talent and grooming them to become international medal prospects under the new plan of Ministry of Sports.
Among the targeted events through her appointment will be the Olympic events in 2024, 2028 and 2032, as she will be serving the Ministry of Sports for the next 10 years until she reaches the retirement age limit of 55.
