The Indian cricket board has approached Mahela Jayawardene to be the head coach of the Indian national team but the former Sri Lanka captain is said to have rejected the offer.
According to Indian Express Newspaper before deciding to approach Anil Kumble, the BCCI is learnt to have contacted current Mumbai Indians coach Jayawardene with the offer.
However, Jayawardene, who has guided Mumbai Indians to multiple IPL titles, is said to be interested in coaching the Sri Lankan team, and the IPL franchise, the newspaper reported.
Also, Jayawardene has repeatedly indicated that he will not take up any national team commitment, having played cricket for almost two decades.
An India coach cannot take up any other cricketing assignment as the new BCCI constitution doesn’t allow any individual to hold two posts at the same time.
